I always wanted to be a doctor
Jun 24th
I had always wanted to be a doctor. A medical doctor.
Well, at least up till 17 year old when I had to choose my A-level subjects, my determination to become a doctor was still very strong.
The source of this determination was my aunt.
I spent a large part of my childhood with my grandparents as my parents were busy with their work. When I was still a little boy, my aunt was a teenager and she spent a lot of time helping my grandmother to look after me and to “entertain” me. So, she quickly became my constant companion and idol.
I remember my grandmother always saying that it is best to have a doctor in the family so that the family’s medical needs are taken care of. I think she meant “…taken care of for free” since there are clinics and hospitals around.
My aunt was an excellent student and consistently did well in school. And she had the opportunity to go to medical school and eventually became a doctor. Thinking back, I am not sure if she became a doctor by her own freewill.
In any case, during her studies in the university, I always had the opportunity to play with her school stuff – set of surgery knives, skeleton, stethoscope, spatula, doctor’s white garb, books, etc. Although, these were just toys to me, I was regularly exposed to the medical profession. And before I knew it, I was writing essays in school about wanting to be a doctor.
My reason? I wanted to saving lives and to help others live better lives.
This decision had steered me to choose to study the subjects in secondary school necessary to prepare for medical school. With that kind of determination, there was no reason to not perform well in the secondary school exams. I got into one of the top junior colleges for my advanced level subjects and it was time to choose subjects again.
At that time, my aunt had graduated from university and officially become a doctor. I remember vividly the day I told her about the subjects I intended to choose and she asked what I wanted to do in the future.
“I want to be a doctor, just like you”, I answered confidently.
“Don’t be a doctor. You’ll work like a dog!” came her response.
At that moment, my whole world shattered. To have someone I admired and respected so much say what she did to me at that time was devastating.
All of a sudden, I felt lost.
In the end, I chose the path of computing and emerged from the process with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering. I didn’t exactly wanted to carve a career in the IT industry. Computing was simply something I was interested to toy with as a hobby having used and programmed an Apple II since 12.
Thinking back, what intrigued me most about computers is that it is a fantastic problem-solving tool. And I LOVE troubleshooting issues and solving problems.
Now, what is the work I am doing now? What am I absolutely committed to?
Teaching, training, coaching and guiding.
It is now very clear to me why I became a teacher. The reason has been consistent all my life in the things that I find pleasure in doing!
It is because I want to save lives and to help others live better lives. Instead of being a medical doctor, I am somewhat a “doctor of the mind” today. I am also in business and I see business as a problem-solving tool. Where there is a problem (i.e. need), there is a market.
So, that’s my own example of how to find your life purpose. Start by thinking about what you wanted to become when you were young(er). Consider why you wanted to become that or do that. Once you arrive at your root motivator (most times this will be one of your personal core values), you would have found your calling and life mission.
Are You Dying?
Aug 17th
This is not a health question but I hear some of you saying, “Of
course not!”
Really?
Actually, we are all dying. It is only a matter of time. The
question is “when will we be dead” and not “whether we will die.”
In fact, everyday we are getting closer to our graves…not
something we like to think about much.
So, if we are all going to die one day, the next question I will
ask is this: What am I here for?
In the greater scheme of things, my life is just a parenthesis ()
in eternity. Was I born just so I will die one day? If so, it
doesn’t make any sense at all and certainly makes life meaningless.
If life is meaningless, then what does it matter whether we live or
die, successful or not, rich or not, promoted or not, healthy or
not…?
My own conclusion, after all these time of searching, is this: Life
is meaningful. It is meaningful because I have a purpose on Earth
and I am here with a mission. So are you.
What’s your life purpose? Mission?
Allow me to encourage you to seek your own unique life purpose.
When you are serving your life purpose, it’ll be like how your hand
fits into a glove perfectly. And you would have found the
motivation, life force and source of energy for the work that you
do.
There are many ways to find your life purpose. Here’s one:
1. Which two of your qualities which, when you are expressing them,
uniquely make you feel that you are most being yourself? E.g. love,
joy, justice, freedom, power, strength, peace, serenity, courage,
etc.
2. List two ways (verbs) you most enjoy expressing your unique
qualities above.
E.g. inspiring people, empowering people, playing basketball,
dancing, parenting, singing, dancing, painting, etc.
3. Assume the world is perfect now (according to the way you see it
as perfect), how would it be? E.g. The world is perfect if everyone
was pursuing their goals; if everyone will get along peacefully; if
the ecology is not being damaged; if everyone is living their
vision, if everyone is happy, etc.
4. Combine all the above into one statement and see what unfolds
from it.
E.g. If my two unique qualities are: love and joy; The two ways I
most enjoy expressing the two qualities are: inspiring and
empowering people; If the world is perfect to me, everyone will be
living their highest vision;
Then, my purpose statement is: Inspiring and empowering people to
live their highest vision in the context of love and joy.
Get it? So, what’s yours?
Find Your Purpose
Dec 4th
A quote of what I read recently by Dr. Wayne Dyer: “There is no way to happiness. Happiness IS the way.”
Dr Dyer was stressing the fact that if we strive for happiness, it will elude us. Yet, if we choose to be happy here and now, we will have it.”
I thought of the amount of time and effort and angst that I went through trying to find my purpose in life some years back. Back then, I held the idea that I have A purpose in this life and unless I find it, I’m not living a fulfilling life.
I have grown to realise that this idea is not an accurate view of what life is about.
The greatest gift that we have as human-beings is that we have free-will. And with free-will, we can choose what we want to do and how we want to react every moment of our lives. We can also choose a purpose that is our bliss. In this sense, we can find a purpose for ourselves NOW instead of THE purpose way out in the future. And that purpose is something that we enjoy doing most parts of our lives right up till the current moment. Such a purpose often involves contributing to the community or simply helping others.
My own learning is this: Go after your bliss (i.e. what you absolutely enjoy doing and find satisfaction from) and your purpose will find you.
